Matthew Urquhart – Standing in the middle of a small town

    July 24, 2021

    1. What or who was your inspiration for getting into photography? My wife has been an avid photographer since before I met her, 25 years ago. She used a Canon Rebel film camera of some sort and would always shoot black and white film. I had always admired her photos. I remember going to photography exhibitions with her over the years, and I was always fascinated by what I saw. For some reason, though, it never occurred to me to give it a shot. Then, about 10 years ago we moved to Victoria from Edmonton, and a few weeks later, I bought her a Canon T3i kit as a gift.…

    “Pool Supplies”

    March 21, 2021

“I want to thank Johaness at @thehiddenriver for believing in my work and releasing this image as a limited edition print. I thought this would be a perfect time to present the entire 35mm film set for context and attach the story behind these images.” Benjamin Fargen “Pool Supplies” I was restless to get out of the house after a week of rainy weather one Sunday afternoon in November 2018. I grabbed my camera and a roll of expired Kodak 400 and headed out the door. I wanted to stay somewhat close to home since it was late in the day and the light was about to get good. As…

Neon & Hot Dust – The film photography of David Sadofsky

    January 24, 2021

After you enjoy this in-depth interview, you can follow and enjoy more of David Sadofsky’s film photography work on Instagram @mojave.dave  Who or what was your inspiration for getting into photography? My grandfather was a lifelong photographer and one of my fondest memories of him was helping develop black and white film in his basement darkroom. He was the resident photographer for just about every big family event for much of my childhood and he and my grandmother traveled quite a bit, always with camera in tow. I fondly remember seeing his work in prints all over the walls of his home and in the many photo books and scrapbooks my…

    January 17, 2021

After you enjoy this in-depth interview, you can follow and enjoy more of Matt Miller’s work on Instagram @neonthunderbird Who or what was your inspiration for getting into photography? I’ve been interested in photography since my first darkroom experience in elementary school, but  I never took shooting very seriously and was always more interested in movies and video. In 2014 I bought a DSLR with the intent of shooting short films and music videos, but it wasn’t long before I started using it to shoot stills as well. A couple of other things happened right around that same time – the science museum I worked at was clearing out some…

It all started back in the days at high school, attending a photography workgroup with the opportunity of using a darkroom. At that time, it was all about black and white. I already often wandered around in nature and was thinking in pictures; the possibility to make these feelings and impressions immortal was captivating. A certain melancholy was even at that time, my closest companion. Unfortunately, after high school, my family couldn’t afford this newfound passion of mine. For a few years…

    December 6, 2020

Stephanie Dobyan is a photographer from Denver, Colorado. Her most recent work can be found and enjoyed on Instagram @dobyanphoto What or who was your inspiration for getting into photography? I have a Master’s Degree in Art History, so I’ve always had a strong passion for photography and all fine art. My school focus was Dada and Surrealism, and the photographers I studied were Hans Bellmer, Claude Cahun, Man Ray, etc. I respect the ideas behind that style – chance, the uncanny, odd juxtapositions. However, I soon realized that I liked the academic nature behind it but didn’t want to create something similar. My style developed from my love of…

My father was a photographer and a missionary in Central America. I picked up the love of photography from him! Did you learn photography on a digital camera when you first got started? How long did it take you to find an interest in film cameras and film photography? First was a palm pilot, then iPhones! I never had an actual DSLR. What or who was your inspiration for getting into photography? My first contact with photography was at an early age, I had a polaroid camera I used to love. My father taught me the basics. Later, my inspiration was fueled with cinema : for example with Monte Hellman with two line blacktop or in opposite style George Lucas with THX 1038. Did you start out with a digital camera when learning photography? How long did it take you to find an interest in film cameras and film photography? They had tickets to see Mac DeMarco perform at the Bill Graham Civic auditorium and had never navigated the BART transit system…so I went along for moral support. My goal was to get them to the front door of the concert hall and then head out for some early evening street photography with my trusty Nikon F3HP + 50mm f1.8. Much to my chagrin, the forecast called for a single solitary evening of rain in what was an otherwise mostly dry…

Enjoy Adrian’s interview & images. IG=@dunetraveler + @256shadesof What or who was your inspiration for getting into photography? When I was a boy, I got my hands on a book by Ansel Adams.I was fascinated by the way he photographed landscapes and reworked the pictures in the darkroom. I saw this kind of photography as a form of “painting”. It was clear to me:…

Carl Fehres stays “in the moment” with his beautiful film portraiture.

    September 2, 2019

I stumbled upon Carl Fehres work one night searching film portraits on IG & I have been a fan ever since. Carl’s work walks a perfect balance between technical & organic…not an easy thing to accomplish in film based portraiture.  He offer’s a prolific mix of black & white vs. color medium format work that never disappoints. I hope you enjoy the following 10 question interview & selected works of Carl Fehres.  IG = @carlfehres + @shotonpoloroid + carlfehres.com What or who was your inspiration for getting into photography? August 24, 2019

Jason Hunter is a film photographer from Chesapeake, VA & the creator/curator of the film group IG page Restore from Backup.  Jason’s images give life to structures and objects that non photographers might otherwise walk past without giving the scene a second thought. I like seeing a little bit of Jason’s everyday life through his physical & figurative lens… I hope you do as well! Enjoy the following interview with film Photographer – Jason Hunter / IG = @maester_jaser  What or who was your inspiration for getting into photography? I’ve always been into photography; however, it wasn’t until about six years ago I started to take it a bit more…

Jason Foster evokes “the real” from his intimate film portraits.

    August 10, 2019

I had the good fortune to stumble across Jason Foster’s Instagram page in January 2018. A model & friend of Jason’s had liked one of my portraits and when I went to check out her page, I was stopped dead in my tracks by a gorgeously raw image that Jason had taken of her. After fully scanning Jason’s page, I sent him a direct message to tell him how much I enjoyed his work and that if he ever decided to do a book…I wanted first dibs at curating it!  A couple months later I messaged him to see if he wanted to grab a quick beer in his hood…

5 Reasons Why Film Photography is still relevant (by Ian Howorth)

    August 4, 2019

Written by the wonderful photographer Ian Howorth. Please visit his site & check out his excellent new photo book called “Arcadia”. Lets start this article with a disclaimer: This is will not be a Film vs Digital debate.  So, why tackle the subject of film photography again? It surely has been done to death and written about by a million people already. Well, the reason is simple. I love film, and I worry that it might go away. Forever.  The worst part is that it wouldn’t be due to it being inferior or unfit for purpose, but due to it being misunderstood.  1. Digital is the bad guy Not true.…

Half a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 in Pacifica.

    July 8, 2019

Next up for The Whole Roll! I lied…this is “The Partial Roll’! I’m going to split these frames into two stories so the photo’s make sense. I shot 11 frames of a 36 exposure roll of Kodak Ektar 100 through my F3 on a lovely weekend trip with my lovely wife to Pacifica, CA. The light was pretty nice and it was fun to shoot somewhere unfamiliar to me. All photos by meCheers, Benjamin.

Did a impromptu walk around down town Sacramento, CA after a rain storm. Started off at Harv’s car wash & walked the rest of mid town until I spent most of the frames of an expired roll of Kodak Max 800. I finished up the roll in my back yard. Enjoy! Benjamin

My first professional 35mm film SLR camera. After exclusively shooting my Sony A7R2 & Leica Q the last 3 years for personal/client work…I decided it was time to get out of my comfort zone and purchase a film camera to start working with. I was influenced by the fact that several pro photog friends of mine started shooting film again for personal/client work. I had been resisting the urge to get into the whole film shooting thing for a while…but I finally gave in. I did what anyone looking for a low cost film camera does..I logged on to Craigslist & searched for something local in my area. A friend…
